In today's world, to speak well is more important than to write well. Agree or disagree. 12.33-13.03 459words Living a more and more complex life in the modern world, we could not value only one kind of ability all the time. The point that to speak well is more important than to write well has its merit at some circumstances. Nevertheless, I think it is inaccurate in other conditions. Which ability we should treasure more depends on what kind of career we want to step into. For people who work as business managers, political leaders and who have occupations in entertainment industry, I believe to speak well is more primary a living skill than to write. These people do not have to write very often, since at most time there are other men writing for them. However, they could not survive without a well-developed speaking skill. Managers need a high efficiency when delivering their orders to employees or negotiating with other companies on commercial issues; super stars have to speak properly in public because they depend on public fame and affection to sustain the career; and political leaders, need to do both of the former two groups' work. All of these are made orally. Consequently, if they could choose only one skill from the two, I guess at a large chance these people will choose to speak well. On the other hand, those in the academic field definitely should value the ability to write well more. Most communications and publications of scientific research is made by media of paper- proposals, treatises, journals, conference papers and so on, which means that academic people understand each other mostly by reading and writing, which is more accurate and objective than speaking. Circumstances that call for public speech in academic field also exist, but much less than writing. Academic people may lose some efficiency without fluent speech, but they will surely lose their career if they cannot write well. We all remember how Steven Hocking become world famous in physical science without even pronouncing properly his theories- he used writing. Also, there are individuals who should balance the two skills for a better career, and the examples involve the office clerks, teachers, and journalists. Clerks' job is to prepare documents for their heads as well as make oral report to colleagues and heads; teachers should explain lecture topic by speaking fluently, but without good writing skill they can not instruct students to write; journalists have to talk with people interviewed which calls for speaking skill, and then write their report for publishing. Writing and speaking both play important roles in their everyday life. In sum, I think the answer to this question varies according to specific individual. Though our communication evolves with the development of information technology, writing and speaking are still both basic skills that function together in various fields. |
