Nowadays, when some clichés such “Boy’s hair should not touch collar” or “Girls’ skirts should not be longer than knees” have been buried into oblivion, I am amazed to hear the requirement that all students should wear school uniforms. Of course, the people who assert such a judgment would put forward some benefits brought out by wearing uniforms. However, their reasoning might not be borne out of careful analysis, and in my opinion, young boys and girls surely have their rights to chooses clothes to wear, which would grant them their own identities and personalities.
Learning is an open-ended and all inclusive term that can occur at any time in any place. Then why the youths would choose schools? Because one manifest characteristic of education or schooling is that it provides a place where the young could shape their inclination, mature their personality and widen their horizon. Particularly, high school students, at the stage of adolescence, are desperately seeking for their own personalities. For example, some students fascinated with rock and roll would wear a large T-shirt with the image of Suede and jeans with holes; some fashionable girls perhaps choose a classic dress. The T-shirt, the dress and so forth help express their own characteristics. On the other hand, if all students wear the same clothes which make them look like some products in the same factory; don’t you feel ridiculous and sad? After all, schools differ from factories in that schools could not impose the same standard to every student.
Furthermore, wearing clothes according students’ choices is instrumental rather than detrimental to the communication between students and faculty. Some people argue that uniforms have an advantage of fairness, that is to say, teachers would not judge a student according to his or her wearing. In fact, for one thing, it is unfair to say that a teacher would discriminate any student because of his or her clothes. For another, judging from the student’s wearing is more often than not conducive to the communication between a teacher and a student since the teacher will know the personality of the student and choose an appropriate way to advise him or her.
Some other claims of those who support uniforms are not so persuasive as they seem at first glance. For example, would uniforms reduce violence in school or decrease the rate of traffic accidents? In my opinion, wearing is indeed an indicator of many things especially the characteristics of students, but it is far away from changing the behaviors and habits of students.
Admittedly, wearing uniforms have some advantages as claimed like creating unity atmosphere. However, according to the discussion above, requiring all students to wear uniforms is not a wise advice as it sounds to some people. I hope I could see students of their own colorful clothes whenever I step to a school. |
