“Clearly, government has a responsibility tosupport the arts. However, if that support is going to produce anything of value,
government must place no restrictions on the art that is produced.”

Recently, there is a debate over whether governmentshould place any restrictions on the art that is supported by the government. Obviously,
since the arts demonstrate the culture and the civilization of the society, it
is government’s responsibility to support the arts. There comes sequence
question, should government regulate the art, by any means? Some argue that because
government pays the bills, it has the right to control the arts. Sometimes the
arts may be aggressive and misleading, if the government give the arts too much
freedom, it is very dangerous for the well being of the country. The other contends
that the arts will be of little value if the government places too many
 restrictions on them.

As far as I concerned, I agree that the governmentshould give the artists as much freedom as possible in order to produce
 anything valuable.

In the first place, the ultimate goal of government’ssupport on the arts is to encourage artists to create the works of artistic excellence.
However, if the artists are working under the pressure that government will
blame them for what they create, there’s no doubt that the regulation will fasten
artists’ originality. A well know example is the culture condition of China during
the Culture Revolution. The government punished all the artists whose works mimic
the political issues purposely or unintentionally, destroyed their works and prohibit
them from creating. This tragedy resulted in a barren era of the arts. Since we
all know the outcome of the government’s restrictions on art, it is our tasks
to prevent such tragedy from occurring again.

In the second place, history events told us that manyexcellent works coming out in a environment that artists are granted much more
freedom. For example, the Renaissance period, Italy provides its artists many
supports so that they could concentrate on their works, while place little
restrictions on them. And the artists were so respectful at that time that they
could ignore such restrictions. Thus in fact, the government place on
restrictions on the art. Another good example, Tang dynasty in China, when the
art of Chinese traditional poems was at its apex, the government did not pay
many concerns on what the poets wrote. In contrast, as the time goes by, in
Qing dynasty, the government censored the poems extensively, ending the flourish
 of the Chinese traditional poems.

To sum up, the government should give the artistsmore space so that they can paint on a broaden canvas. Too much censorship will
kill the originality and the creativity of the artists, thus will prevent the
artists from producing anything of value. In fact, the freedom is as much as,
if not more so, the best support for the arts.
