上海 6.16 大三 ---------------------------------------------march 22th------------------------------------------------------------------ According to the discipline of the team for toefl in june, i begin to write my diary of toefl preparation. from now on, if i am in good mood and have sufficient time, i will keep it written in english. it has been long since i write a complete article in english last time. if any mistake is seen made, please point it out to me, thank you! now, i will list some basic information about myself first. i have got a score more than 600 in cet-6 more than 1 year ago, and i am going to take toefl in june 16th this year. since there will be 4 final examinations in my university for selective courses closely follow the toefl i have registered, it will be impossible to keep my old style, which means enjoy my happy life and work extremely hard for one or two weeks before the end of the semester and get a fairly good result (to be honest, this is not because of my intelligence but the easy test, which can be well understood by all the students in poor universities . ) i have no choice but try my best for both my gpa and toefl during all this semester. ok, just regard it as a retrospect of my life in senior high school, haha... i will take courses in shanghai new oriental school every weekend from april 7th to june 3. it may be more properly to treat my work has been done these days as preparation for the courses than for the toefl. i have gone though all the introductory information, skills, sample tests and solutions in og ( the sections for self test is not included). (O, the electricity will be cut off in 10 minutes, to be continue..........) ----------------------------------------------march 23th------------------------------------------------------------------- thanks for the encouragement from 2nd floor and advices from 3rd floor. now i will continue. except for the og, i also read 10 writings of lixiaolai's 185 sample writing before listening to the corresponding mp3 for 2 or 3 times, according to the advice from cd to train listening, speaking and writing skill together. in this process, i get some questions about mr. li's writing style. may i have the honor to discuss them with you? ( just click the words in blue, either can be ok.) in addition, i have downloaded the mp3 for listening special training and its text. i have just listened to the talk and speech in cd1, paying no attention to the questions after them, because it is said that the questions in that book is quite different from the real toefl while the listening material is quite good. what is more, i have got a book named new break thought-english vocabulary-12000 written by zhangyanhua and liyuzhi published by oriental publishing company. i have no idea whether this "oriental" means "new oriental" which is known to all. anyway, i am quite fond of the cards for memorizing in that book. by now, i have covered 1/3 of it and been trying to finish it before my courses in shanghai new oriental. as for delta, i do not know whether i should read the directions in it first or directly start the practice section both in it and og, because if the teachers in shanghai new oriental will carefully explain each direction in this book, the read on my own might be a waste of time.( it is said that shanghai new oriental school use delta as text book for toefl training.) any advice, please? my goal for these days is trying to get everything prepared to ensure that i will gain as much as possible in the new oriental school's class. ok, that is all for today. i will renew it some day next week. ----------------------------------------------june 16th---------------------------------------------------------------------- because of 8 weeks' course from XDF, i did not renew my diary as i promised to. i am terribly sorry! after more than 3 months' preparation and 4 hours' test, i finally have my toefl-ibt done! it is my last hope. may God bless me! ----------------------------------------------july 5th-------------------------------------------------------------------------- i have received my score: Test | Test Date | Reading | Listening | Speaking | Writing | Total | TELXML | June 16, 2007 | 29 | 26 | 19 | 27 | 101 |
detail: Reading Skills | Level | Your Performance | Reading | High(22-30) | Test takers who receive a score at the HIGH level, as you did, typically understand academic texts in English that require a wide range of reading abilities regardless of the difficulty of the texts. Test takers who score at the HIGH level, typically - have a very good command of academic vocabulary and grammatical structure;
- can understand and connect information, make appropriate inferences, and synthesize ideas, even when the text is conceptually dense and the language is complex;
- can recognize the expository organization of a text and the role that specific information serves within the larger text, even when the text is conceptually dense; and
- can abstract major ideas from a text, even when the text is conceptually dense and contains complex language.
| Listening Skills | Level | Your Performance | Listening | High(22-30) | Test takers who receive a score at the HIGH level, as you did, typically understand conversations and lectures in English that present a wide range of listening demands. These demands can include difficult vocabulary (uncommon terms, or colloquial or figurative language), complex grammatical structures, abstract or complex ideas, and/or making sense of unexpected or seemingly contradictory information. When listening to lectures and conversations like these, test takers at the HIGH level typically can - understand main ideas and important details, whether they are stated or implied;
- distinguish more important ideas from less important ones;
- understand how information is being used (for example, to provide evidence for a claim or describe a step in a complex process);
- recognize how pieces of information are connected (for example, in a cause-and-effect relationship);
- understand many different ways that speakers use language for purposes other than to give information (for example, to emphasize a point, express agreement or disagreement, or convey intentions indirectly); and
- synthesize information, even when it is not presented in sequence, and make correct inferences on the basis of that information.
| Speaking Skills | Level | Your Performance | Speaking about familiar topics | Fair(2.5 - 3.0) | Your responses indicate you are able to speak in English about your personal experiences and opinions in a mostly clear and coherent manner. Your speech is mostly clear with only occasional errors. Grammar and vocabulary are somewhat limited and include some errors. At times, the limitations prevent you from elaborating fully on your ideas, but they do not seriously interfere with overall communication. | Speaking about campus situations | Limited(1.5 - 2.0) | Your responses indicate that you have some difficulty speaking in English about information from conversations, newspaper articles, university publications, and so on. While you are able to talk about some of the key information from these sources, limited grammar and vocabulary may prevent you from fully expressing your ideas. Problems with pronunciation make it difficult for listeners to understand you at times. | Speaking about academic course content | Fair(2.5 - 3.0) | Your responses demonstrate that you are able to speak in English about academic reading and lecture material, with only minor communication problems. For the most part, your speech is clear and easy to understand. However, some problems with pronunciation and intonation may occasionally cause difficulty for the listener. Your use of grammar and vocabulary is adequate to talk about the topics, but some ideas are not fully developed or are inaccurate. | Writing Skills | Level | Your Performance | Writing based on reading and listening | Good(4.0 - 5.0) | You responded well to the task, relating the lecture to the reading. Weaknesses, if you have any, might have to do with - slight imprecision in your summary of some of the main points and/or
- use of English that is occasionally ungrammatical or unclear.
| Writing based on knowledge and experience | Fair(2.5 - 3.5) | You expressed ideas with reasons, examples, and details, but your response indicated weaknesses such as - you may not provide enough specific support and development for your main points;
- your ideas may be difficult to follow because of how you organize your essay or because of the language you use to connect your ideas; and/or
- grammatical mistakes or vague/incorrect uses of words may make the writing difficult to understand.
