[求助]请问现在参加reception如果发挥不好对申请的影响？

You don't need to do anything in a reception, except for listening to a presentation.  If you feel comfortable, you can chat with some alumni or ask questions to the adcom members, but you are not obliged to do so.  The bottomline is, no one will keep track of who did what on a reception.  So your attendence is risk-free.

I'm not the adcom member, but if I were asked to read a 4 page recommendation letter, I would consider that the recommender has a problem to make his/her point.  And the recommender wastes my time.  For the same reason, when I screen resume of job applicants to my team, I will throw away everything that is more than 2 pages long.  A person who can not determine what is important in his career will not be a competent employee.
