Answer is A. All I like to know is the usage/meaning of "where once", which I cannot find in any of my dictionaries! thanks!

where once 过去曾经，和之后发生的情况比较，有差异不同。
没有 while once.

个人理解，答错勿怪。

首先，where once不是词组，我查了200万字的材料，3本大词典，也没有找到where once的组合。

其次，where与once应该分开来理解。Where肯定是作连词，意思是：（WM）
WHERE: conjunction
b : in a case, situation, or respect in which “outstanding where endurance is called for”
译为中文是：在…的情况

再次，once就是“曾经”的意思，作副词，与主句的after 1897形成完美的对照（难道没有觉得这个“after 1897”挺怪的吗？原来她在这里与她的情郎遥遥相望！）

整个句子的意思是：
在曾经工会默许… 的情况，1897后，联合矿工组织坚决….
Where在此表达着一定的对比关系。

最后，再来一个例子，又是一个完美的爱情故事（once与now之间）！
Where history once was primarily narrative, it is now entirely analytic.

我也看见过。
但WHERE ONCE作BECAUSE讲一是没有依据；
二从此题及我的例子看，显然不通啊！

where once = 什么好象是在LZM的书里说过。不过到底等于什么我也记不起来了。

不过我倒是倾向将where解释为连接词，连接2 个句子。once中文翻成一旦。就又回到我们熟悉的方面来了。通过the union ... acquiesced to the prejudices of ... by supporting 排除其他用法。

（1）应该是acquiesce to prejudice而不是acquiesce to其他东东。
（2）by supporting非常明确的表示是the union 发出的动作，而不是其他。

LZM说“where once表‘原因’，相当于because，而不存在while once用法，…”（P148，E8-4）不过，这完全就是没有根据的一家之言。结合这个题目和我举的阅读中出现的例子，LZM肯定是不对的！
