TOPIC OF READING PASSAGE: library at Alexandria (ancient library) description of library: founded by Ptolemy 1;expanded by Ptolemy 2; had 300,000 to 700,000 scrolls how scrolls obtained: borrowed or bought and copied by hand;from foreigh powers in trade; from citizens in payment of debts; from ships in port TOPIC OF LISTENING PASSAGE: how library was destroyed thought to have been destroyed bu Julius Caesar: JC invaded port of Alexandria(48-47BC);JC's forces set ships in port on fire;fire could have spread to library clues that JC did not destroy library: library mentioned in literature long after time of JC; monement to destroy temples and libraries in 4th century 以下是我的作文 The reading material gives a brief introduction of the marvelous library of Alexandria, including its establishment and the process of its expanding, while the lecture discusses about when was the library destroyed and who should be accused. Though it was traditionally believed that Caesar should be the one but recent evidence goes against this assumption.
According to the reading part, the library was founded by Ptolemy 1 and greatly expanded by his son, Ptolemy 2 and following owners. They tempted to gather every Greek work as well as many works from other parts of the Western world. Since the amount of the scrolls reached unbelievably between 300,000 and 700,000, extraordinary huge number of people was employed to copy the scrolls and prepare them. Ptolemy 2 collected scrolls by means of exchanging them with goods, demanding citizens to hand in manuscripts to pay debts to the government, and copying all the manuscripts discovered on trading ships. A debate has lasted for long on when the library was destroyed and who did it, as illustrated in the listening material. Caesar used to be blamed for the loss of the library due to the fact that he ordered to set fire to all the ships in the harbour when he invaded the city of Alexandria. It was believed that the fire went all its way from the harbour into the city and thus burn down the library. Several references of the library after the death of Caesar, however, are found and prove that Caesar could not be the destroyer. The explanation that is widely received nowadays is that the library, or at least part of it, existed until late 4th century and then was destroyed in a movement, aimed at destroying all the libraries.

As it is presented above, the history of the library of Alexandria started at the time of Ptolemy 1, once came to be gorgeous to have a considerable collection, and finally ended in the latter half of the 4th century in some movement, instead of the destroy caused by Caesar.
