NYU Stern taking questions

Hi, guys,

Add NYU Stern on your application list. It is a great school. I would say it is one of the best choices for every Finance guy, but even for those marketing, or IT people, it will still help you realize your career dream. Living in big apple is also a terrific experience.

As to 2005 application candidates, you should hurry up. Do not be late after Dec 1 in order to catch the opportunity for interview. Good luck!

I would say GMAT is for sure very important especially most of Chinese applicants have very high scores. More than 720 will be a safe score. And also essay is crucial as well. Usually you should have at least 3 years working experience, but I  know some NYU Stern MBAs who have less than 3 year w/e but they usually work for famous companies or have very special stories.

GPA will not that important though, but definitely you should have at least over 3.0. I would say around 3.4 of GPA is a safe level.

Recommendation is also important. If you could find alumni to write recommendation letter for you, and of course this person knows you well, the chance for you to be admitted would be increased a lot, even your scores are not very impressive.

If you have 700+ GMAT, 3.4+GPA, 3+ years w/e, and plus well-written essays and recommendation, you would quite possibly receive interview invitation.

Stern admission officer will fly to Beijing each year around late-Feb to mid-March to conduct interview. If you get the invitation, the final admission would be 30% to 50%. No interview, no admission.

Me: G 720, W/E 7+, essay and rec should be fine, however GPA is only 2.7. Is the requirement of GPA very tough, say GPA> 3.0 is necessary?

I'm in US now. Will a campus visit (showing my strong interest in Stern) increase the chance of admission?

I am a Stern 2004 graduate and currently working in NYC. I have to say your GPA is kind of too low comparing with the average of admits of 3.4. You have to explain that in your essays. Your working background is quite unique, which is a good point.

Your GMAT score is just a little above average.

I suggest you focus on essays and recommendation letters to persuade Admission officers. Also "Why NYU Stern". think about it seriously.

A campus visit would be definitely good for your application, which shows your strong interest in the school.

以下是引用seaverr在2004-10-9 17:10:00的发言:

Many IT background Stern students, who wished to keep staying in the industry,  advanced to business development jobs after graduation in decent IT companies like IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, Avaya, etc. Most of career switchers jumped into finance, mainly in IB and IM. e.g. Two Chinese F1 students with IT background in class of 2005 did interns at Lehman Brothers this summer and had already got fulltime job offers from Lehman's IB and equity research divisions.
