Optional essays are just that, so don't feel obligated to write something just because the space is there on your application.

A. What are your reasons for undertaking MBA study at Carnegie Mellon? Please describe how your experience, education, Carnegie Mellon MBA and future career plans relate to each other. Describe your short-term and long-term objectives and how you plan to achieve them.

B. Because MBA students work closely together, we would like to understand what there is about your background and your experiences that would make a contribution to the diversity of the entering class and enhance the educational experience of other students.

C. Please answer one of the following two questions:
1. Please describe an ethical issue that you have faced in your professional life, how you dealt with the situation and what the outcome was, or
2. Please describe a failure or setback in your professional or academic life. How did you overcome this setback. What, if anything, would you do differently if confronted with this situation again?

D. Please comment on any item (or items) in your application you think worthy or necessary of further explanation. We are most interested in having you address any weaknesses or strengths that bear on your application. Note: You must complete this essay if you answered "yes" to either of the "additional information" questions on the previous page.

E. If there is any additional information or material you would like to include, please feel free to include it in a separate essay. Note: This essay is intended to provide a place for you to add information that you think is important but it is not covered elsewhere in the application.

Essays should be double-spaced and should not exceed the word limits given below. Their is an abbreviated application with fewer essay questions for re-applicants.

1. Why are you seeking an MBA? What are your plans and goals after you receive your degree? (500 words)

2. You find yourself on an elevator with the Dean of Chicago GSB. Please tell him why this is the right school for you, and what you hope to contribute if admitted. (500 words)

3. If you could be present at any event in time, what would it be and why? (500 words)

4. You've been given $1 million to set up a philanthropic organization. What would it support and why? (500 words)

What career do you plan to pursue upon completing the MBA and why? How will the Johnson School help you achieve these goals?

3 Optional Essay - 400 words
If there is other information you would like to add regarding your candidacy, please use the optional essay. For instance, if you believe one or more aspects of your application (e.g., undergraduate GPA or test scores) do(es) not accurately reflect your potential for success at the Johnson School and in your chosen career, you may use this essay to explain those circumstances. You may also include background information you would like the admissions committee to take into consideration as it reviews your application. This essay is for clarification purposes only.

4 Required for Park Applicants - 400 words or less
Describe how you would benefit personally and professionally from being a Park Leadership Fellow, and how your Park project would enhance the Johnson School, or the Ithaca community. Also, describe your reasons for selecting this project and why it has special meaning.

1. Please respond fully but concisely to the following essay. Although there are no restrictions for the length of your response, most applicants use 1,000 words for fewer. There is no right or wrong answer.)
For the past 10 years, you have worked for the primary employer in an economically depressed city. Eighty percent of your company's revenue comes from one flagship product, but revenue has declined steadily for the past five years as new competitors entered the market. Last year, company revenue fell 15% to $20 million, while operating costs continued to escalate. An aggressive new competitor is expected to launch a lower cost, more advanced version of your company's flagship product. If true, this could severely erode your company's market share and push the company into bankruptcy.

Senior management assigned you to lead a team to investigate this new competitor and analyze the threat it poses. You stressed the vital importance of this project to your team, explaining that it could make the difference between the company's success and failure. As a result, your team worked tirelessly in pursuit of the information. Throughout the process, you were very impressed with the level of detail one of your top analysts was able to obtain on the competitor's product. With this in-depth information, you were able to develop a strategic recommendation that will have a good chance of successfully fending off the competitor's launch plan. The CEO is thrilled with the work and immediately offers you and the analyst a promotion. Walking back to your office the analyst comments, "It sure is lucky that my cousin works for the competition!"

Keeping in mind that the future of your company is potentially in peril, what would you do? What professional or personal experiences would you draw upon to guide your actions?

2. Why is an MBA a critical next step towards your short and long-term career goals? Why is Tuck the best MBA program for you? (250-750 words)

3. What is the most significant non-academic disappointment you have experienced? How did you handle the situation, and what have you learned from it? (250-750 words)
