A6. The type of leadership that an organization needs (be it a college, a country, or a business, for example) depends largely on whether the organization is stable or in crisis. 2004.04.30

Complex。 The real challenge to the leadership of an organization is how to avoid crisis rather than how to maintain stability in crisis.
A.
Undoubtedly, one who can keep the stability of an organization can be trusted as an effective leader.
B.
However, a more important quality of a leader is to remain alert against crisis and to make sure that his organization stay on the safe road.
C.
What is just as challenging to a leader is to turn crises into opportunities and failure into success.

The author contends that the type of leadership that an organization needs depends largely on whether the organization is stable or crisis.  On balance, I agree with the author’s contention.  Different times require different types of leadership.  When an organization is stable, it benefits from leaders who can maintain the stability and growth; when an organization is in crisis, it demands leaders with courage, vision and determination that can lead the organization through the crisis.

When an organization is stable, it needs leaders who focus on execution excellence, who can maintain stability and growth.  For example, Microsoft, after surviving the anti-trust battle, named Steven Ballmer to succeed Gates as CEO.  Ballmer quickly made it clear to Microsoft employees and the rest of the world that he believes Microsoft is now a mature and stable company and must behave maturely.  Under his watch, Microsoft quickly settled law suites and mended fences with other industry players, initiated the “trustworthy computing”, and refocused on listening to and serving customers.  Ballmer’s programmatic approach to lead a mature and respected – not hated -- Microsoft has won broad praise.

On the other hand, when an organization is in crisis, it demands a different set of leadership qualities.  Organization in crisis demands leaders with great vision that can lead the organization out of the crisis, with courage to rise up to the challenges, and with determination that won’t easily flounder in the face of difficulties.  The saving of IBM by Lou Gerstner vividly illustrates this.  When he took control of IBM in 1993, the company was in a huge crisis and on the blink of becoming irrelevant.  Once a customer of IBM, Gerstner had a great vision for IBM.  He didn’t believe that IBM should be broke up – as his predecessor had suggested; instead he insisted to get IBM divisions to work as one and emphasized the importance of services instead of mainframe hardware.  His courage, vision and determination led IBM through the crisis becoming even stronger, and cemented his position as one of the greatest CEOs in modern business.

Furthermore, it is worth-well to point out that stableness and crisis are not totally separated, static and absolute.  Actually they are interconnected.  One of the challenge to leadership in a stable environment is to always be on alert and avoid potential crisis.  In addition, great leaders of organization in crisis can turn crisis into opportunities and turn failures into success.

In the final analysis, different times require different types of leadership.. A stable  organization benefits from leaders who can maintain the stability and growth; while an organization in crisis demands leaders with courage, vision and determination to lead the organization through the crisis.
