AA12 The following appeared as part of a promotional campaign to sell advertising space in the Daily Gazette to grocery stores in the Marston area.

“Advertising the reduced price of selected grocery items in the Daily Gazette will help you increase your sales. Consider the results of a study

conducted last month. Thirty sale items from a store in downtown Marston were advertised in the Gazette for four days. Each time one or more

of the 30 items was purchased, clerks asked whether the shopper had read the ad. Two-thirds of the 200 shoppers asked answered in the

affirmative. Furthermore, more than half the customers who answered in the affirmative spent over $100 at the store.”

Discuss how well reasoned . .

To encourage people to advertise in the Daily Gazette, the author declares that advertising the reduced price of selected items in the Daily Gazette will help increase the sales. The author bases his conclusion on the reason that 30 sales items from a store in downtown Maston were advertised in the Gazette for four days, and it turns out that the advertisement works. Furthermore, the author provides another evidence to support his argument: when the clerks conducted an oral survey among the shoppers,  most shoppers said they had read the advertisement and more than half ones spent over 100 bucks at the store. Despite the reasons stated, the argument is problematic for several aspects.

In the first place, the author attributes the sale of the 30 items to the ad. in Daily Gazette without any evidence. Just because the 30 items have been advertised in daily Gatte, the author establishes the causality between them. It is possible the sale has nothing to do with the Daily Gatte but just is related to the reduced price. It means that no matter they are advertised in Daily Gatte or not, only if the items are discounted, there will be the sale of them. The author's statement is unconvincing, because he has not offered any persuasive evidence.

In the second place, the author cites an undependable survey to demonstrate his argument. Since the survey is hold by the clerks of the shop, it is suspect whether the survey reflect the truth. Since the clerks are not the professional investigators, it is possible the survey was not conducted properly, and the result may deviate from the truth. For example, the clerk asked two hundred shoppers. But whether the 200 shoppers were representative of the whole shoppers? What if there were over 1000 shoppers and most ones didn't know the ad. at all? Therefore, without any evidence to prove the 200 shoppers are sufficient and representative of the over all shoppers, the survey conducted by the clerks is not sufficient to confirm that the sale of the item is the result of the advertisement.

In the third place, even if it is the case that the survey is effective, this survey alone does not constitute the compelling evidence to support the author’s standpoint. For example, the author mentions that 200 shoppers read the advertisement, but he does not state if the shoppers is the new customers who came to buy the advertised items. What’s more, the figure that over half shoppers asked spent more than 100 dollars is not meaningful here, Since we don’t know what does the money spend on. There is the possibility that the shopper asked were the long stand consumers who only bought the items only stated in the advertisement. Hence, the author failed to provide useful figures in the survey.

To conclude, the author's advice to advertise in the Daily Gatte to enhance the sale is logically unreasonable because of the lack of evidence and the suspect survey. To substantiate his argument, the author should demonstrate that the sale of the items is only because of the advertisement in Daily Gatte, and the survey is dependable to illustrate the effect of the advertisement.

It is possible the sale has nothing to do with the Daily Gatte but just is related to the reduced price.

cite informal poll conduct purchase unconvincing establish correlation significant significantly causal precede predecessor traditionally associate extremely extreme biase unreliable indicate indicator defective defectiveness flaw drawback

at the very least

To strengthen the argument, the author must, at the very least, provide comparisons of overall sales reports as described above.
