Whether the conflict is inevitable when a corporation whose primary concern is to make money must also acknowledge a duty to serve society is still bothering the managers of many companies. While I think the conflict may sometimes occurs, in most time the main economic interest of a company and its duty to serve society can coincide.
On the one hand, it is a fact that most companies concerned about their profits, the main goal of business, in order to survive in the intensive competitions. However, their duty to serve society which sometimes is contradict to the economic intention is must be acknowledged by corporations. Consequently, companies have to scarify the profitability to satisfy the duty to serve society. For example, a chemistry corporation used to emit large mount of toxic gases which did harm not only to people in that district, but also to many plants which are used to purify the air. To rectify the deteriorate environmental conditions, the corporation decided to update their facilities, an action which will cost a large mount of money and will reduce its profit.
On the other hand, the main business goal of companies and the duty to serve society can coincide in most time. Serving the public, corporation can yield great reputation in the society. People are willing to buy the products sold by such companies. Other business partners prefer to cooperate with the companies which have great reputation. Thus, companies can booth their business more quickly than other competitors. Moreover, if corporations' actions to serve society are also favored by the government and then government will give some benefits to such corporations such as tax reduction. So that companies will decrease their cost and gain larger profit. Therefore, serving society is benefit to both the short-term and long-term profits of the corporations.
In sum, although I admit the conflict between the corporation's concern and the duty to serve society sometimes occurs, I believe the coincidence of the two is the majority. Because the great reputation gained from the actions to serve society plays the most important part in the long-term development of corporations.
