134. “Employees should not be asked to provide formal evaluations of their supervisor because they have little basis for judging or even understanding their supervisor’s performance.”

It is a controversial issue whether employees should be asked to evaluate their supervisors. Different people with various backgrounds hold different opinions. Some people contend that employees should be asked to evaluate their supervisors. However, other people asserts that employee should not be asked to do so because they have little basis for judging or even understanding their supervisors' performance. As far as I am concerned, the employee should be asked to evaluate their supervisors. The reasons can be illustrated as follows.
First, employees are the people who work with the supervisor for most of the working time. They know clearly how their supervisor works. For instance, in some enterprises, especially those stated-owned companies, the supervisor dose not do anything and assign all the work to his staff. When it comes to the time for reporting to the management, the supervisor takes all the works of others as his own. In this case, if employees are invited to involve in the evaluation of the supervisor, the management will clearly understand the situation and make a wise decision to select a proper supervisor.
Second, the evaluation of a person should not be one-sided. Some supervisors might have strong technical skills to fulfill his own task but are lacking in the management skills to handle with his subordinates. For example, in my company, a project needs the corroboration from all the team members. Some team leaders only focus on their own part and do not coordinate the work between other team members. Although they do a great job in their own part, the whole project is not a perfect one. If the team members involve in the evaluation of the performance of the team leaders, the management will give feedback to the team leaders the areas they should improve. It will upgrade the efficiency of the whole business.
Admittedly, we do not deny that the evaluation of employees cannot decide the overall performance of the supervisors because some of the employees do lack the judgment and knowledge for appraisal.
In summary, I support that the advice from employees should be considered to make evaluation of supervisors because the employees are the people spend most of the work time with the supervisors and clearly know the supervisors' work attitudes and overall skills.
