AA的一题: The following appeared as part of an annual report sent to stockholders by Olympic Foods, a processor of frozen foods.
“Over time, the costs of processing go down because as organizations learn how to do things better, they become more efficient. In color film processing, for example, the cost of a 3-by-5-inch print fell from 50 cents for five-day service in 1970 to 20 cents for one-day service in 1984. The same principle applies to the processing of food. And since Olympic Foods will soon celebrate its twenty-fifth birthday, we can expect that our long experience will enable us to minimize costs and thus maximize profits.”

Based upon a correlation between the decrease in the costs of processing and the organizations’ conception of the working methods, the author concludes that the Olympic Foods will be able to minimize costs and thus maximize profits in the future. In support of this conclusion, the author cites two general principles that “as organizations learn how to do things better, they become more efficient.” and “minimizing costs can cause maximal profits.” Specially, the author also cites a example of the color film processing to demonstrate the possibility of success. All the factors are indeed relevant and the conclusion appears reasonable on its face. However, a few concerns need to be addressed.
In the first place, the author assume that the organizations become more efficient is all because they learn how to do things better as a result of 25 years’ experience. Fact is learning how to do things better does not equality to doing things more efficient. For example, one knows how to cook more delicious food, but this does not mean the person can cook more food in a given time. Consequently, unless the author can demonstrate that the experience brings the organizations more efficiency rather others, the author’s conclusion is unfounded.
Secondly, the author’ assumption about “minimizing costs can cause maximal profits.” make a even bigger mistake. Suppose that a factory has a negative operation lever, as we all know, the more efficiently it products the more loses it suffers. In a word, the reason of increasing profits is not so simple that just to be base on the efficiency. The author should provide concrete evidence as well to demonstrate that the organizations’ promoted efficiency can indeed make more profits for the company.
Finally, the author rests on the assumption that the color film processing industry is analogous to the food industry in effect of operation experience. Since the clear dissimilarity between the two industries, the comparison is worthless to the author’ conclusion about the reason that the organizations to meet their business goal. For example, factors such as problems of spoilage, timely transportation, and changing market, which are of the main considerations in food industry, are no need to taken into account in color film processing industry. Thus, it is lacking sound reason for organizations of Olympic Foods can use the experience to make more profits in their own domain.
In conclusion, the author’ argument does not adequately buttress the conclusion that the Olympic Foods will be able to minimize costs and thus maximize profits in the future. To make this argument logically acceptable, the author would have to show that the 25 years’ experience has taught the company how to things better and the conception can bring it high efficiency. In addition, to better assess the argument as it stands, the author should provide concrete evidence as well to demonstrate that the decreased costs will not diminish the quality of its product, which is the key factor to gain more profits. Finally, supporting examples drawn from industries more similar to the food industry would further substantiate the author’ view.
