On the cusp of the 21th 21st century, the value of knowledge and professional skills have has been raised to a level that has never been reached before. Education, as a primary means to acquire knowledge, has become the main provider of individual opportunity in our society. While it is true that education itself does not ensure success, still I believe education plays a crucial role in the process of achieving personal success.
For one thing, education provides people with expertise knowledge and professional skills, both of which are necessary procuring professional success. In the past, general manual skills may be enough for someone to get a fine job. In today's society, however, specific expertise instead is the prerequisite for most well-paid promising work. For example, however smart or incisive one might be, he or she must have highly professional knowledge on financial markets in order to qualify as a stock trader in NYSE. Although mere financial knowledge does not ensure success in the stock market, it is hard to imagine how someone could even start working without enough professional knowledge. Therefore, education leads one to the first step toward career success.
For another, money and property are steadily replaced by knowledge and professional skills in the process of accumulating personal wealth. In our society, it is knowledge rather than capital that has become the most scarce scarcest resource. If someone has the essential knowledge and skills, he or she need needs not to worry about necessary funding to start the business. A recent example involves the famous Google guys. As two PhD student students in college, they own no big sum of money. However, venture capitals are ready to finance whatever program they find prospective. And as Google the company went public, private investors as well the starting members of company win considerable returns from the IPO. This clearly illustrates how knowledge, instead of money and property, has become a main provider of personal success.
Admittedly, however, education itself does not necessarily ensure ultimate success. After all, receiving good education and being well educated are not the same. We cannot simply equates equate formal education with the genuine grasp of knowledge and skills. A college dropout as Bill Gates can be a leading figure in the industry, while a graduate from Stanford can be a mediocre programmer. Yet we have to recognize the fact that to achieve success, at least one has to obtain knowledge and the ability to learn further through education. Anyway, the Google guys established the core idea of their later business in the process of writing their doctoral dissertation.
To conclude, although education does not equal to success, still it opens the door for an individual to seek success in one's career. As a main provider of knowledge and skills, the much cherished capital of today’s society, education has definitely become an indispensable factor in one’s personal success.
