Issue 033
People are likely to accept as a leader only someone who has demonstrated an ability to perform the same tasks that he or she expects others to perform.
正文:
It can be often heard from the employees in a company or in an organization that they are likely to accept the leaders who are capable of doing the same tasks that the leaders expect the employees to perform. In my view, the leadership is a complicated concept that can not be justified only by the ability to perform the same task. We should focus on whether the leader has a leadership rather than the capability of doing the same tasks.
To begin with, a leader’s pivotal role is to give his or her leadership to the team on the way to the goal. A good team should comprise the natural leader and natural followers, which means the leader plays a role as an organizer instead of a doer in setting up the goals, delegating tasks, motivating his or her team members and doing the plan as a whole. A fitting and public example is that the President of the United States, George W. Bush, does not necessarily have all the specific knowledge and experience of every individual department in the government, such as the military, the agriculture, and the education. Contrast the George W. Bush case with that of a business leadership such as Michael Dell, founder of Dell Computer, who by way of his training and experience as a computer engineer earned the respect of his employees. Consequently, the ability of doing the same tasks cannot be characterized as the whole art of the leadership.
In addition, it is impossible for a leader to be skilled as the expert in every field. And in particular, an ability to perform the same task that the leader asks the employees to do is not an indicator of a strong leadership; at most reflect that he or she is a tough doer. It is the fact that, with the rapid advancement, it is impossible for a people to know everything; as a consequence, to expect the leader to be an expert in every field is totally unfair and out of reality. To be specific, when ask a sales manager within a company, who has never done the similar job before, to do the production task, it is difficult for him or her to fulfill the task as ideal as a producing-worker who has specialized in the related domain for years.
However, it is admitted that if the leader is able to perform the work that he or she assigns to the employees, the leader will easily achieve full respect and trust from the team, and meanwhile, the leader can give his or her professional direction and guidance to his or her employees, thereby making the whole team can complete the task better and more efficient. But this does not represent that it is only such ability that will make a people to become a qualified leader.
In the final analysis, we cannot judge a leader only by the ability to do the same work. It is a more complex and complicated concept that the leadership is. An experienced and distinguished leader is who can understand the essence of the leadership rather than who only master an ability to perform the same task his or her employees can do. |
