(A)显然不符合逻辑, (B)文中没有此类暗示, (D)不会有人没事发表声称, (E) arrest record provides better evidence  区解原文含义, (C)has been peddling off 现在完成进行时有强烈的感情色彩，表示愤怒不满(网上查的, 有异议请指出), 因此asserting is after arrest record.

此题若理解文章意思就不难,但是好象象我们非母语者无法体会到意思.

C正确。原文说1739年S有peddling，S又说到已断断续续peddling20年了，所以S在1765年这样说的可能性很大。因为如果S在1765说已peddling20年了，则1739年很可能有peddling。
