大全-B-1

1.     Below is an excerpt from a letter that was sent by the chairman of a corporation to the stockholders.

A number of charges have been raised against me, some serious, some trivial. Individuals seeking to control the corporation for their own purposes have demanded my resignation. Remember that no court of law in any state has found me guilty of any criminal offense whatsoever. In the American tradition, as you know, an individual is considered innocent until proven guilty. Furthermore, as the corporation’s unbroken six-year record of growth will show, my conduct of my official duties as chairman has only helped enhance the success of the corporation, and so benefited every stockholder.

Which of the following can be properly inferred from the excerpt?

(A) The chairman believes that all those who have demanded his resignation are motivated by desire to control the corporation for their own purposes.

(B) Any misdeeds that the chairman may have committed were motivated by his desire to enhance the success of the corporation.

(C) The chairman is innocent of any criminal offense.

(D) The corporation has expanded steadily over the past six years.D

(E) Any legal proceedings against the chairman have resulted in his acquittal.

为什么A错,是all的原因吗?黑体字的意思里有隐含的all的意思呀。

这是集合从属概念问题。原文的关系是 A 属于 B, A:Individuals seeking to control the corporation for their own purposes ; B: Those who have demanded my resignation. A 是B的子集合。由此推不出选项(A),即B 属于A。

To further clarify the question, we can add "..., and those who want to get back on me also demanded my resignation".

A) The chairman believes that all those who have demanded his resignation are motivated by desire to control the corporation for their own purposes.

I hope BZ doesn't mind if I give a different opinion here:

remember that the boldfaced words are written by the chairman himself to the stock-holders only, and it may not reflect his own opinion. In other words, who knows what really is behind the chairman's mind. Maybe he knows that the stock holders don't have any intention to control the company, but just want to get rid of the chairman whose damaged reputation will infulence the image of the company.

Hence, A is not a good choice.

I don't think we can think about it this way. 'cause if you think what the chairman said cannot reflect the reality, no answer can be chosen here. All of them can be assumed to be the chairman's partial opinion.

Here we go. It is the reader's job to figure out whether something is fact or opinion among many things mentioned in one article. Please take a look at one part of the chairman's letter:

Furthermore, as the corporation’s unbroken six-year record of growth will show, my conduct of my official duties as chairman has only helped enhance the success of the corporation, and so benefited every stockholder.

About the bold-faced words above, I don't think the chairman lies, b/c everyone can obtain the record of the company's past performance. (whether the numbers were made up or not).

Hence, D is the answer.

OK, "Which of the following can be properly inferred from the excerpt?" This sentence tells us we just simpily draw conclusion from the excerpt,  no matter who said it, weather it is right or wrong, on whose position it stands, all of them are not what we should take into account, just assume every sentence, every word, is true.

以下是引用kallyli在2006-7-25 0:20:00的发言:

Kallyli:

You  still don't want to go to bed yet? look at the choices here:

(A) The chairman believes (says) that all those who have demanded his resignation are motivated by desire to control the corporation for their own purposes.

(D) The corporation has expanded steadily over the past six years.

Which one above do you think is more like a fact?  D, right.

A should be correct too if we replace the word "believe" by the green one "says".

What does that mean here? It means that the words are what the chairman says, but may nor may not be what he believes.
