but 与when ：but前面是个完整句，but后面所有的又是一个完整句，when是but后面完整句的一个时间状语，所以but是连接前后两个完整句子的连词，与when没有关系。

应该是说逗号后面句子没主语，也就是built没主语

另外加入even though改变了原文的语气。even though是弱语气词。

but 后是另一个分句，on hearing是介词状语啊。

结构是galio did not, but...he built...

on hearing做but分句中的状语。
