og 87?can , capability

87. Beyond the immediate cash flow crisis that the museum faces, its survival depends on if it can broaden its membership and leave its cramped quarters for a site where it can store and exhibit its more than 12,000 artifacts.

(A)       if it can broaden its membership and leave

(B)        whether it can broaden its membership and leave

(C)       whether or not it has the capability to broaden its membership and can leave

(D)       its ability for broadening its membership and leaving

(E)        the ability for it to broaden its membership and leave

Choice A is faulty because it uses the unidiomatic construction depends on if; whether is required to connect depends on with the clause beginning it can....(whether引导名词从句,而且,讨论是否问题,ifoveruse之嫌) Choice C uses whether or not where only whether is needed, includes the awkward and wordy construction has the capability to, and unnecessarily repeats the idea of capability with can(整个就是一个不简洁错误大全). Choices D and E use unidiomatic constructions where the phrase its ability to broaden is required. Choice B--idiomatic, concise, and correct--is best.

请问为什么OG上说DEPENDS ON 必须加WHETIER, 而不是IF??
DEPENDS ON 中on是perp,后应该加n,用whether而非if引导名词性从句

1,have the capability to在用法上一般指人有能力,这里的IT指代的是THE MUSEUM。再说,即使要用,也要用have the capability of (doing), 所以AWKWARD。

2,have the capability to在意思上和CAN相同,但比CAN长了N多,所以WORDY。

3,这个结构是个并列分句,前面用了have the capability to后半分句中的CAN结构上也可省略,所以WORDY AGAIN。

1.      the capability to V和 the capability of 皆可。
capability   noun [C or U]
These tests are beyond the capability (= ability) of an average 12-year-old.
[+ to infinitive] With the new machines we finally have the capability (= power) to do the job properly.
Several countries are trying to develop a nuclear capability (= weapons needed to fight a nuclear war).

2.      the capability to V 和 can V 的功能相同,都是表能力。
capability 的能力,有进一步的隐含做事的效率、成功等等…(able to do things effectively and skillfully, and to achieve results)

3. 本题原题目用can,不要用the capability to V的说法,有些改变句意且” unnecessary”和” wordy”。

somebody is capable of doing sth 正确

somebody has the capability to do sth

e.g. he has the capability to speak four languages.

(D)       its ability for broadening its membership and leaving
