   为什么不选E呢？是因为倒装了的原因么？

   是不是without引导的条件从句，主句必须要用will的形式？

我想E的最大问题还是it在最后，离Morocco太远，中间还有Algeria, 这样会产生指代不清。

这题我还是有疑问,如果用虚拟的话,为什么用would never be secured,而不是would never have been secured,

这里应该是表示过去的虚拟...整个句子环境都在过去.

但这里我觉得和某动作之前没关系。对于虚拟语态，过去的虚拟就是would have been啊，这里have been不是强调某个动作前吧。。

would be是现在范畴的虚拟。

这整件事我觉得都是发生在过去的，应该是过去范畴。

请赐教

我想如果以你我的口气，现在说这句话：without it their grip on Algeria would never be secure.可能用have been，因为对于现在，上面那句话是发生在过去，但对于 the French throughout the first half of the twentieth century 当时assumed而言，这个假设不仅仅是指可能发生在assumed前的，也可能指assumed当时的，或是未来的，所以我认为对于assumed而言不是个过去态，是个一般态。故用would比较好。

其实assumed that后更多理解就是一种将来的推测，would就是个过去将来。如：assumed that prices would rise.

本题不能算是虚拟语气，只是假设条件句，因为虚拟表达的是根本不能实现的情景，不符合本题的意思。
