我想问既然B中splitting作名词用，那么apart做什么成分？apart应该是副词，不能修饰名词呀

apart (ADJ):

如同alive, available, 都是属于a打头的ADJ, 后置修饰......

splitting即使做名词用，表示的也是一个动作，因而apart做形容词“分开的”修饰一个动作逻辑上不好。

split apart看来应该是个常用词组。但要当作名词用，又要保留原来的副词修饰，总觉得怪怪的。。。

我就是把the splitting apart 整体看成一个动名词词组。 of continents修饰它。

这样，也和前面的the onset of ice ages对应上了。冰期的出现－大陆的分离
