D-did = appeared，所以句子就是：they appear to us as they appeared in 时态/逻辑都有矛盾。

我认为，这里不存在意思的重复，所以没有什么要补助动词来表示省略的。

as是个连词引导一个句子，我觉得理解成“当什么时候”比较好。即使有助动词也是be动词

如果把C改成

we see them as if they were during ... 对么？

as = 象; as if =似乎

如果把 'as' 改成 'as if' 就等于把确定语气换成不确定语气, 改变了愿文的意思。
