OG 46

46. A study commissioned by the Department of Agriculture showed that if calves exercise and associated with other calves, they will require less medication and gain weight quicker than do those raised in confinement.

(A)  associated with other calves, they will require less medication and gain weight quicker than do

(B)  associated with other calves, they require less medication and gain weight quicker than

(C)  associate with other calves, they required less medication and will gain weight quicker than do

(D)  associate with other calves, they have required less medication and will gain weight more quickly than do

(E)  associate with other calves, they require less medication and gain weight more quickly than

Choice E, the best answer, uses the adverbial phrase more quickly than to modify the verb phrase gain weight. In A, B, and C, quicker than is incorrect because an adjective should not be used to modify a verb phrase. E is also the only choice with consistent verb tenses. The first verb in the clauses introduced by showed that is exercise. A and B incorrectly compound that present tense verb with a past tense verb, associated. C and D correctly use associate, but C follows with the past tense required and D with the present perfect have required. Both C and D incorrectly conclude with the future tense will gain.

OG解释的最后一句只针对C/D,却没有提到A。为什么不能使用将来时,OG中自己也说if条件句若用现在时,主句应该用将来时。我觉得用‘客观事实’来解释好像有点牵强。

谢谢指导

那么,如果前面的一般现在时前后统一,后面就可以用一般将来时么?

同问 因为在前面的og37中:

While some academicians believe that business ethics should be integrated into every business course, others say that students will take ethics seriously only if it is taught as a separate, required course

in sentence expressing a conditional result ( x will happen if y happens),the verb of the main clause should be in the future tense and the verb of if clause should be in presen indicative.

  我查了longman,上面说,
associate somebody/something with something

be associated (with somebody/something)

我觉得这里associate该用被动,sth be associated with

另外,如果这里用associated的话,if sth does and (be) done,这个be可否省略?谢谢……

个人观点:

A study commissioned by the Department of Agriculture showed

表示这个事情是被commission的, 因此虽然不能算是客观事实, 也比较具有客观含意, 所以用现在是是可以接受的.

Associate的问题不是关键, 而且主被动的平行很多是Awkward, 基本不用考虑了.

Awkward也该给逻辑让路啊…………  associate with在longman上只做关于,或者与人交往

associate with somebody
to spend time with someone, especially someone that other people disapprove of
I don't like these layabouts you're associating with.

be associated (with somebody/something)
a) to be related to a particular subject, activity etc
problems associated with cancer treatment

只有上诉两条ASSOCIATE后面没跟东西

Be这里面省略没有道理, 因为前面没有相同的Be存在.

associate with somebody, associate (vi)
to spend time with someone, especially someone that other people disapprove of

I don't like these layabouts you're associating with.
Don't associate with him.
I don't like you associating with such people.

這裡的associate是主動,所以不可能是 if sth does and (be) done去省略be.

这题的than后面要ommit do,  不是说谓语相同的话省略谓语补出do吗, 为什么这里要省略do呢?
