ETS的意思就是a protection in D 在这个题里面不能取代其他名词，潜台词就是a protection应该是前面说明的内容，但是前面并没有，因此错。

不知你理解没有？

且不说单复数的问题，protection 能不能指shields呢？

盾牌是一种保护可不可以呢？

还有

为什么og上说 a method of protecting 比 a method to protect 和 a method protecting 好呢？看来不光是一个method 单数的问题

不是很清楚，请大家帮助

1. protection在这里作为同位语, 前面没有任何对等的名词,  shields, items, frames....都是东西, 但不是protection. 你可以说这些是一种protection, 但不等于protection. 看一下OG9里面的那个"of a type"就知道为什么了.

2. to do sth使用的时候最好要有明确的动作发出者, 整个句子中没有出现过人. a method protecting, protecting作为分词直接修饰method.逻辑上讲不通, method怎么能protect呢? 而a method of protecting将method后面跟一个介词短语表明性质就合乎逻辑了.

我觉得这里a method作为同位语，应该能对前面的词起概括作用，前面的词是a military equipment，是一个名词，所以用a method of protecting与其对应比用表示动作的to do与其对应要好。

写成 animal-hide shields with wooden frames were essential items of military equipment , a method of protecting warriors against enemy arrows and spears.

如果是同位语的话，应当与前面的 esswntial items 对应吧，那才是中心词。

总觉得这里 a method 是抽象的概念，一种方法吗，偏偏用可数单数形式。

同位语形式真的没有protecting---不管是伴状，还是定语来的简单

即使用 a method of protecting也不对 og已经说了. 只是用其来比较 a method protecting/to protect为何不好.

理解一下前半句的意思: ....是...., 即使把method看成概括前面的东西也不对.
