264. Scientists believe that unlike the males of most species of moth, the male whistling moths of Nambung, Australia, call female moths to them by the use of acoustical signals, but not olfactory ones, and they attract their mates during the day, rather than at night.
(A) by the use of acoustical signals, but not olfactory ones, and they attract
(B) by the use of acoustical signals instead of using olfactory ones, and attracting
(C) by using acoustical signals, not using olfactory ones, and by attracting
(D) using acoustical signals, rather than olfactory ones, and attract
(E) using acoustical signals, but not olfactory ones, and attracting
答案e

我知道其他选项都不对,但我对e选项还有点疑问:using...跟在them后面,不是变成修饰them吗,即the male whistling moths ?而这里应该是表示the male whistling moths 吸引female通过某种方式,那么如果用"by using acoustical signals, but not olfactory ones, and attracting"是不是更好呢?

你的答案是不是看错了? 应该是D.

答案是D,不是E
by using acoustical signals应该是不可以,我认为using 已经表达了by的含义

the usage: by(prep) + Noun => by using --> "using" is treated as a Noun
Since it's a Noun, it loses the meaning of "action" that should follow "call"
furthermore, the action "attract" is parallel to "call", so it should be in present
and "rather than" is more directness and conciseness than "but not" in this case

'call' and 'using' seem to be a phrase. here are some examples:

I have a service set up, and I want to be able to call a method on my
service using a variable that has been typed into a text field... so
let's say that the following line produces a result from the server:

To make a call using a payphone you can use one of three methods: (1 ... company. To make a local call using coins

不是吧,这几个call的性质好象不同哦,题目中的call是动词,这里的call是名词。
