C的that是限定修饰, 意思为只有那些messenger送的news用了4天, 言下之意, 还有其它的news用别的方法送, 所以不对.

E的took XXX days to do something用法很正确. by swift messenger可以看成是交通工具. 比如: it took me 4 hours by car, but only 30 minutes by subway to get to work. 21世纪, 我们有bus和subway做交通工具. 1770's 可能只有by messenger, by horse, or by pigeon.
