我也不懂，只是觉得这里用任何代词，不管是they，which，it都会产生歧义，

还是用一个概念性的名字a task来概括前面的一堆内容会比较准确，反正不会有人理解为US是一个task。

which不能指代前面整个句子! 从逻辑上讲，什么东西是complex and depends heavily on understanding of the Farsi language？只能是她所作的工作(task),而不是relationship. Which只能修饰relationship,而relationship不是依赖于了解Farsi language的。

所以用task来指代前面的understand how it works, the role it has played in the Middle East and its intricate relationship with the United States。这样就不会造成歧义。

how it works, the role.. & its intricate relationship... 就是understand 的3个并列宾语，但是which不能够指代前面整个句子，因为ETS认为这样有歧义：即which可能使修饰前面整个句子，也可以修饰就近的united states。

a task that .....是整个句子的同位语，解释Ms. Wrights要做的这件事情。
