Help: 老板要我写recommendation, 他review -- 怎么办？!

老板刚休假回来，又碰上很多别的事情，刚才跟我说他怕来不及写recommendation (deadline: Oct. 13)。他要我先写recommendation, 然后他review and edit.  

我很不想这样做。可他的确没时间。What's the best I can do?  Any advice?  Thanks!

hehe ,据我所知，老板们都有这个习惯，商学院的adcom其实也知道这一情况，谁让老板们都很忙呢。虽然本应由老板来写，可是既然他授权给你，又有什么办法，尽量写的公允一些，别吹过了，然后让老板过目修改签字之后寄走想来应该没问题吧，商学院即使查，老板也会给你应着的

The problem is, if I write the recommendation, then clearly it will bear my tone and style of writing, which will be very similar to those of my essays.  I believe in general AdCom doesn't like this idea, and if they detect that the recommendation is drafted by the applicant, they tends to discount the recommendation a little bit -- which will put the applicant in slight disadvantage.

If my understanding correct?  Or did I miss something obvious?

Robert, I am not sure if you can manage your writing style a little bit for the reference letter. To tell you the simple truth, I wrote the letter myself for my boss's signature and my friend's from HBS did so too.

Also, I sort of feel it's hard for the reader to detect the similarity of writing style between your essays and references. I heard from my American friends that most Chinese write quite similar English, and we've not formed any observeable style yet.

But when you write the reference letter, make sure you want to re-position yourself to be the boss. I once read a recommendation flooded with strong adjectives like "definite, superior, outstanding...". I guess it's a ding. Admission committee will raise doubt on either the authenticity of this letter or your recommender's quality.

At least you can control your recommendation. I think your boss believe you can write a fairly objective and supportive recommendation for yourself. If you are afraid of the style, why not ask someone else, such as one of your friend, to  write the recommendation  following your idea. And don't forget your boss will "review and edit". So don't worry, robertchu,  I believe you'll make it.

Actually I even don't have chance to see the content of my recommendation written by my recommenders. In this sense I think you are lucky.

I finally gave the raw materials and some initial thoughts to the editor of some of my published articles, and asked her, a native speaker, to draft the recommendation.  Anyway, let's see how this will go.
