It may help. I met several admission officers of different uni., they seem to suggest provide as much information as possible. And a senior consultant of B-school admission suggest applicants write something for the optional essays.

However, i admit that it depends. Generally, I don't think admission committee will be annoyed if you really give them valuable information about yourself.

They might view you as not following their instructions.  And as mentioned earlier, they may resent having to read another essay.

Try your best to convey your message within the required essays and within the required word-limits.  Write an extra optional essay only when you absolutely need to do so, when if without this extra piece your application would be substantially weaken, and when this extra piece can substantially strengthen your overall application package.
