Different Bschools have different policy. Generally they won't call each of your reference for confirmation--they must also consider their cost and benefit. Rather, they mostly will seek inconsistency in your application materials--if your reference letter provide further evidence about your academic performance, professional potential or personalities that you claim in your essays or represent in your application form. Once they find inconsistency, they may choose 1) ask you to explain these things in the interview ; 2)email --seldom call--your reference to check it up 3) discredit your application -- especially when most ad com know that Chinese reference seldom write the recommendation letter and has a tradition of saying no bad words. These are what I see from some interviews with ad com, as well as hear from others' experience. Best suggestions are: Write the reference strategically: use recommendations as a supportive evidence of what you claim in your essays, give more details about your complishments and/or give new examples of your character/potental, etc. Write your recommendation rationally: don't brag on yourself. Pointing out some suggestions on improvement seems reasonable and convincing keep contact with your reference: Inform him of your contact methods and tell him to notify you in case school email/calls him. Good luck ! |
