Google launched its indoor maps feature in Singapore on Tuesday, making the city state the second country in Asia to have it.
Android phone users will be able to use the online mapping system to help themselves find their way inside shopping malls and large buildings, local daily Straits Times reported.
Such information includes floor plans and basic walking directions for any building which has submitted its indoor maps to Google. It uses existing Wi-Fi access points to pinpoint a user's location and follows his movement as he travels across different floors.
In Singapore, 22 malls have signed up for its launch. Changi Airport is not on the list.
The application was launched in the United States in November 2011, with shopping malls and airports among the first to be mapped. Japan was the first Asian country to use it in heavily populated cities such as Tokyo and Osaka.
Indoor maps for malls, however, were not new in Singapore. In 2010, SingTel launched an application which pinpoints a user's location and gives directions to shops on its detailed floor plan and store directory.
With Google Maps, however, there is no need to launch a separate application to view an indoor map. It swops seamlessly from outdoor maps to indoor floor plans when users zoom into the building on the screen. To keep the application updated, businesses can upload their floor plans to Google.

A research published Monday in JAMA Internal Medicine showed that women are more likely to run a risk of failure and undergoing revision surgery in hip replacements compared to men.

The study was funded by the US Food and Drug Administration. Researchers analyzed over 35,000 surgeries at 46 hospitals in the Kaiser Permanente health system.

They found that 2.3 percent of the women and 1.9 percent of the men had undergone a repeat surgery after an average of three years, to fix such postoperative problems as instability, infection, broken bones and loosening.

According to Maria Inacio, one author of the study, a possible factor contributing to the failing for women may be the different physical structure between men and women.

Women tend to have smaller joints and bones. Devices with smaller femoral heads are inclined to dislocate and require a surgical repair.

Co-author Dr. Monti Khatod supposed that a greater loss of bone density in women is also one factor for the failing.

Up to now, it remains unclear which models of hip implants are best for women, but "I would not choose the latest, greatest hip implant if I were a woman patient. ... At least if it's been for sale for a few years, there's more evidence for how well it's working." said Diana Zuckerman, president of the nonprofit National Research Center for Women & Families, writing an accompanying commentary in the medical journal.

The shady world of internet hackers have hit again. Late last week, Facebook said it had been victimized by a “sophisticated attack” –designed to disrupt –or gain access to data from the social media powerhouse.

In a statement, Facebook said, “As part of our ongoing investigation, we are working continuously and closely with our own internal engineer teams, with security teams at other companies, and with law enforcement authorities to learn everything we can about the attack, and how to prevent similar incidents in the future.”

Sam Hamadeh, business attorney, said, “Anytime you have an incident like this, it is just going to help shatter public confidence in social networks.”

Sam Hamadeh points out, that there is the public side to Facebook. Then, there is a parallel entity – a consumer website. That side of Facebook is for developers of games, dating sites and so on.

For Facebook as a business – Hamadeh says the hacking couldn’t come at a worse time for the company.

Sam Hamadeh, business attorney, said, “In its recent earnings announcements, Facebook has touted facebook “gifting”, right, you can essentially click a button and buy a gift for a friend that has a birthday or Facebook commerce that requires Facebook to store your credit card.”

Facebook says it has found no evidence that user data was compromised.

There is no question hackers are becoming more sophisticated. Today, giving the fast food giant Burger King, a whopper of an embarrassment – BK’s site, with 89,000 followers was made to look like McDonald’s, saying Burger King had been sold. It is all a fabrication.

The real danger is hacking costs company loads of money from the clean-up and investigation and beyond.

If businesses are subject to hacking that jeopardizes credit card security, banks could shut down the ability to process credit cards and that in turn could effectively put a company out of business.(313)

China Mobile, the country's most active supporter of homegrown 4G TD-LTE technology, will for the first time exhibit at the annual Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, the world's biggest trade show in the mobile industry, the company announced Monday, signaling the telecom titan's ambition to reclaim lost ground from its smaller rivals as China moves into the 4G era.

China Mobile is slated to showcase its latest TD-LTE push during its exhibitor debut at next week's MWC, Qiu Hong, an official with the carrier's department of market operation, told reporters in Beijing on Monday.

The debut came after China Mobile's recent moves to tout a faster 4G network at a time when the idea of 3G still remains something of a novelty for many Chinese users.

Not long after launching a dual-mode LTE network in Hong Kong in December, which couples the homegrown TD-LTE with the existing FDD-LTE technology, China Mobile announced commercial trials of TD-LTE networks in Hangzhou and Wenzhou at the beginning of February.

A few smartphone models that support TD-LTE will be unveiled by the carrier during the MWC, said Wang Hengjiang, deputy general manager of the terminal subsidiary of China Mobile.

The phones are likely to hit the shelves later this year, according to Wang.

This may especially help bump up market confidence in the commercial success of TD-LTE, as the lack of capable mobile devices has long been a concern hampering the technology's popularity.

"The TD-LTE standard is far more globally acknowledged then its predecessor TD-SCDMA¬, and is expected to have a brighter outlook, which will undoubtedly give China Mobile a boost against competitors in the next-generation era," Joy Yang, Shanghai-based chief analyst of the carrier network infrastructure group at Gartner Inc, told the Global Times.

As of January, 29 telecom operators across the world have signed 45 TD-LTE commercial contracts and launched 64 TD-LTE trial networks, according to Qiu. A total of 14 TD-LTE networks have been rolled out commercially around the globe.

China Mobile's hegemony from the 2G era has gradually diminished as China Unicom and China Telecom, its two smaller rivals, have gained momentum in China's 3G race.

By the end of December, the number of users subscribing to China Mobile's 3G TD-SCDMA­ network totaled 87.93 million, while those subscribing to China Unicom and China Telecom's 3G networks stood at 76.46 million and 69.05 million respectively, according to their latest data, a reflection of the dwindling gap between the three telecom operators.

While China Mobile is unlikely to reclaim its previous levels of dominance after the country finally embraces the faster 4G networks, its edge over the other two carriers will definitely be strengthened, Yang remarked.

In stark contrast with China Mobile's 4G hype, China Unicom and China Telecom's 4G schemes remain low-profile.

But Yang downplays market speculation about an imminent issuance of 4G licenses in the country, noting that "the Chinese government is not likely to hand out 4G licenses before 2014, as it may be keen to avoid overlapping investment since the issuance of 3G licenses happened not long ago." (181)

The smog that choked Beijing last month may have been bad for public health, but it could also prove to be a tonic for China's ailing solar sector.

With calls growing for the world's biggest coal consumer to reform its energy consumption structure, some photovoltaic (PV) companies, having suffered one of their most difficult years in 2012, are now finding themselves with more breathing room.

Zhu Zhiguo, senior vice president of Trina Solar, one of the country's leading solar module makers, said he has confidence in the company's performance and prospects for 2013, as demand still exists and government support is strengthening.

"We are going to move to a new level. We will start to post profits in at least one quarter in the second half of the year," Zhu said.

His remarks came after an official with the National Energy Administration said last week that China will increase its solar energy supply target from 21 gigawatts (gw) to 35 gw by 2015.

The new target, revised for the fourth time in five years, will represent massive growth from the 6.5 gw of solar power installed in 2012.

At present, solar power accounts for less than 3 percent of China's total energy consumption, according to Zhu. "Every percentage point added to that share would mean a great deal to us and even to the country's economy."

Meanwhile, the trajectory of the New York-listed company's stock is underpinning Zhu's confidence.

Shares of Trina Solar, along with those of other Chinese PV manufacturers, such as LDK and Suntech, rebounded from a historic low in November after China signaled willingness to prop up its struggling PV export industry.

Data from the Ministry of Commerce showed that more than 90 percent of Chinese solar products are exported, with 70 percent going to the eurozone and 10 percent to the US market.

However, a variety of PV trade investigations were initiated against China in 2012, plaguing an industry that has seen its profit margins squeezed by significant overcapacity.

Orders for Chinese PV equipment slumped 80 percent in 2012 from a year ago, according to the China PV industry Alliance. As much as 90 percent of Chinese polysilicon makers halted production and 80 percent of solar panel producers shut down or sharply reduced output, it said.

To offset shrinking overseas demand, the Chinese government has stepped up supportive measures since last fall to reshape the oversupplied sector and reorient it towards the vastly untapped domestic market.

The incentives include encouraging mergers and restructuring in the industry, boosting distributed solar power generation and paving the way for a more market-oriented on-grid solar electricity pricing scheme.
The policies will surely be a boon for the cash-strapped solar industry, said Xu Chongqing, an energy expert at the Shandong Academy of Sciences.

"They will help compensate PV companies' lost share in the foreign market," Xu said. Big companies will have more time to adjust their business models and enhance research and development, while outdated capacity will be phased out through mergers.

"Uncompetitive players may begin to exit the market this year," said Liu Jianli, marketing director of the Shandong Linuo Power Group.

Spurred by the government's support policies, the sector is expected to register a steady growth rate of 10 percent in 2013.

Other business insiders agreed that the industry may begin to show signs of recovery in 2013. However, uncertainties related to a trade investigation in the EU may cast a shadow over the rally.

In November, the EU announced that it would probe alleged state subsidies for Chinese solar panel manufacturers. This came amid an existing investigation into allegations of Chinese dumping of such products in European markets.

Michael Barker, an analyst at the research firm Solarbuzz, said in a note that the EU case may impact the PV industry to a larger extent than the one in the United States last year.

The United States in early November issued anti-dumping and countervailing duties on imports of Chinese-made c-Si cells, while the EU investigation is targeting not only c-Si cells, but also c-Si wafers and modules, posing pressure on a much broader level, Barker wrote.

The outcome will mark a watershed moment for the industry's recovery, said Zhou Xuhui, analyst at Shenyin Wanguo Securities.

Given the boom in the domestic market, Chinese solar power companies can tolerate duties under 10 percent and start to take a turn for the better in the second half of 2013, Zhou said.

However, should the EU approve duties of more than 20 percent, Chinese firms would have almost no access to the European market. The loss would be too much and the industry's turnaround would be delayed to 2014, he added.

Although Chinese manufacturers have been bracing for unfavorable investigation results, they still hope that the EU might rescind the probe.

"I hope they will give up. Otherwise, the road for our company to become profitable will be much bumpier," Zhu said. "European countries may also be hurt, as costs will be pushed up across the industry."(830)
