考古1:The fields ofantebellum (pre-Civil War)political history and women’s history use separatesources and focus onseparate issues.   olitical historians,examiningsources such as voting records, newspapers, and politicians’writings, focus onthe emergence in the 1840’s of a new “American politicalnation,” and sincewomen were neither voters nor politicians, they receivelittle discussion. Women’s historians,meanwhile, have shown little interest in the subjectof party politics, insteaddrawing on personal papers, legal records such aswills, and records of femaleassociations to illuminate women’s domestic lives,their moral reformactivities, and the emergence of the woman’s rights movement. However, most historians haveunderestimated the extent andsignificance of women’s political allegiance inthe antebellum period. Forexample, inthe presidential election campaigns of the 1840’s, the Virginia Whigparty strove to win theallegiance of Virginia ’swomen by inviting them to rallies and speeches. According to Whig propaganda,women who turned out at the party’srallies gathered information that enabledthem to mold party-loyal families,reminded men of moral values that transcendedparty loyalty, and conferredmoral standing on the party. Virginia Democrats, inresponse, began to makesimilar appeals to women as well. By themid-1850’sthe inclusion of women in the rituals of party politics had becomecommonplaceand the ideology that justified such inclusion had been assimilatedby theDemocrats.
