首先这一题可以通过排除法做。
A和B选项，fragment，他们使整个句子缺少谓语动词
C:elephant为复数，不可用as much as,而且后面的with的用法不对.with 什么东西domesticated ...blablabla
D:不符合平行结构，AND连接covered和accomendated...后面的WITH结构比起D来说WORDY了
再回答你的问题：
不缺were的，a third of them domesticated and performing various essential tasks.在这句话中做同位语，修饰elephants。
如果加上were，那就是说后面也是一个完整的句子,那么整段话两个动词，但是中间都没有连接词，所以是不能加were的

  恩 谢谢！  我其实一直纠结的是后面那个and看起来不平行~~~  应该是elephant被驯化了啊~~~ 难道是省略了（which were）  呃~~~不懂！！！

forests是有谓语的  像楼上说的  还是平行的两个谓语~~

是这样的，这个and链接的两个词domesticated和performing都是修饰的elephant
要从逻辑意思着手，对于我们所谈论的主提elephant,是被驯化所以是v-ed形式，因为elephant是主动完成所以是performing!
