請各位高手指教:
A square countertop has a square tile inlay in the center, leaving an untiled strip of uniform width around the tile. If the ratio of the tiled area to the untiled area is 25 to 39, which of the following could be the width, in inches, of the strip?

I.   1 1/2
II.  3
III. 4 1/2

a) I only   b)II only   c) I and II only   d)I and III only  e) I, II, and III

the answer is e, 可是卻看不懂到底題目在說什麼, 好長喔, 請問有別的比較簡單的理解方法嗎?

我的思路：这道题的意思就是一个大方块里面套了一个小方块。小方块是tiled，大方块-小方块的部分就是untiled,
设小方块的边长为y，uniform width 为x，根据题意有
y^2/[(y+2x)^2-y^2]=25/39,得39y^2-100xy-100x^2=0,这个方程y必须要有正的实根，所以它的b^2-4ac应该大于0，而这个方程的b^2-4ac恒大于0，所以x没有限制。所以选E.

大正方形套小正方形的题目.

设大正方形边长是X，小正方形面积是Y，它们之间的条形围成的区域宽度是W，根据题意：

1）     Y平方/X平方=25/（25＋39）＝>  Y/X=5/8

2）    W=(X-Y)/2

解得，W=(3X)/16

由此可见，W什么数字都可以取。
